Abstract
This paper examines the history of drama as explained by Aristotle in the Poetics (particularly 1449a 9-25 and 1449a 37-b10) with a view to distinguish what may be information and what is Aristotelian theory: the parallel history of tragedy and comedy; the meters, and particularly the function of the trochaic tetrameter; the evolution of tragic lexis and of logoiand mythoi. All this leads to a reexamination of the evidence on the presence of a chorus in (or in some of) Epicharmus’ plays.
