Abstract

Drawing on the critical theory developed by Genette in Palimpsests, this article examines the
Odyssey’s capacity to generate new works in new media, which should be understood and
interpreted as artistically autonomous. Through an analysis of three adaptations of the Odyssey
for stage and screen—Luca Ronconi’s Odissea: doppio ritorno, Uberto Pasolini’s The Return,
and Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey—the article seeks to show that variations, reductions, and
the repurposing of narrative structures and character functions, particularly that of Odysseus,
should not be regarded as betrayals of the Homeric model, but rather as responses to the
authors’ creativity and their audiences’ horizons of expectation.
