Abstract
This paper aims to analyse the problematic nature of the relationship between oratory and
tragedy in the second half of the first century AD, taking Senecan drama and the Dialogus de
oratoribus as its fields of inquiry. Paradoxically, the stronger and more stable the connections
become at the level of expression and in the deep structure of the text, the more tragic poetry
and oratoria eloquentia emerge as alternative ways of life, rather than merely different literary
choices. Both are intended to address the challenge of change, but through radically opposed
strategies and with diametrically opposed aims.
Questo contributo si propone di analizzare la natura problematica del nesso oratoria/tragedia
nella seconda metà del I secolo d.C. eleggendo quale terreno d’indagine il teatro senecano e il
Dialogus de oratoribus. Paradossalmente quanto più forti e stabili divengono gli intrecci nella
forma dell’espressione e nella struttura profonda del testo, tanto più poesia tragica e oratoria
eloquentia si caratterizzano come scelte di vita alternative, prima e più che differenti opzioni
letterarie, volte entrambe a gestire la sfida del cambiamento ma mediante strategie e con finalità
polarmente opposte.
