Abstract

In Aeischylus’ Persians, Xerxes is overall described as an incompetent, irresponsible and self-damaging ruler, an utter disgrace to himself and to his kingdom. His “religious fault” consists in his overall inability to rule Persia according to the objectively just and necessary modalities that are as such required by divinity. The grotesque final scene only confirms this negative characterization. Xerxes refuses to understand the deep reasons for his failure, shows no intention to share the grief of his subjects, and only strives to keep them in full submission. The audience may be led to sympathize with the Persian people, but certainly not with their leader.
