Abstract
The purpose of the contribution will be to focus on the assumption for a dramaturgical analysis in modern reinterpretations of Virgil’s Dido myth (Aen. I, IV, VI). In particular, we will point out the elements that reveal the familiarity of the poet with the world of theatrical performance. Carthage’s episode becomes a witness to the strong overlap of tragic imagery to the epic, which operates in subjects and contents, narrative structures, language, dramatic rhythm and even in the evocation of a “tragic feeling” as concrete experience. This paper traces the theatrical features of Dido’s episode that, re-establishing its status as epic composition, may explain its circular revivals in modern and contemporary tragic genre.
