Abstract
This contribution aims to shed some further light on the possible relationship between Sophocles and Shakespeare, starting from the circulation of the ancient Greek tragedy in the sixteenth-century Europe and England. The analysis will involve the symbolic patterns and the tragic mechanisms that connect the two authors according toa wide and dynamic idea of intertextuality: Hamlet and King Lear, for example, will be read not only in relation to Oedipus the King, as has been widely assumed, but also to Electra and Oedipus at Colonus. What I would like to show is that Shakespeare turns to Sophocles in a sort of ‘descent to Fathers’, by identifying and developing some fundamental archetypes both in the representation of power, and in a theory of knowledge based on the subject and the familiar relationships.
Questo contributo intende riconsiderare alcune possibili tangenze tra Sofocle e Shakespeare, a partire dall’ipotesi sulla circolazione del teatro greco nell’Europa e nell’Inghilterra del Cinquecento e sulla ricezione shakespeariana. L’analisi si concentra sui motivi simbolici e sui meccanismi tragici che mettono in contatto i due drammaturghi sulla base di una nozione ampia e dinamica di intertestualità: Hamlet e King Lear saranno perciò letti non soltanto in relazione all’Edipo re – come è stato ampiamente proposto – ma anche all’Elettra e all’Edipo a Colono. Si vorrebbe così dimostrare come Shakespeare ricorra a Sofocle in una sorta di goethiana ‘discesa ai padri’, e cioè di identificazione di archetipi fondamentali per l’analisi e la rappresentazione del potere a partire da una teoria della conoscenza che coinvolge a fondo il soggetto e i rapporti familiari.
