Abstract
Within the broader and well-established framework of the debate on the translation of ancient
drama for the contemporary stage, and the relationship between the written and spoken word,
this paper examines the recent edition of The Clouds by Aristophanes, edited by Leonardo
Fiorentini (Rusconi, Santarcangelo di Romagna, 2024). Rather than focusing on the philological
and literary aspects, thoroughly addressed by the author in the extensive introductory essay, the
analysis focuses on the theatrical effectiveness of the translational choices that have been made.
Through a close reading of two key passages from the play (Socrates’ epiphany and the parodos
of the Chorus), the paper aims to demonstrate how the new translation succeeds in restoring the
performative dimension of the original text, preserving the linguistic complexity of
Aristophanes’ work while ensuring clarity and accessibility for a modern audience.
Nel più ampio e consolidato contesto del dibattito sulla traduzione del teatro antico per la scena
contemporanea, del rapporto tra parola scritta e parola detta, questo contributo analizza la
recente edizione delle Nuvole di Aristofane curata da Leonardo Fiorentini (Rusconi,
Santarcangelo di Romagna 2024), concentrandosi non tanto sugli aspetti filologici e letterari,
approfonditi dall’autore nell’ampio saggio introduttivo, quanto sull’efficacia scenica delle scelte
traduttive adottate. Attraverso l’analisi di due passi della commedia (l’epifania di Socrate e la
parodo del Coro), il testo si propone di mettere in luce come la nuova traduzione riesca a
restituire la dimensione performativa del testo originario, preservando la complessità linguistica
dell’opera e senza sacrificarne la chiarezza e la fruibilità per un pubblico moderno.
