Abstract
This paper aims to understand the nature and use of gesture within the scenic purposes of Seneca’s tragedy. The investigation is structured on two levels: on the one hand, gestures are motivated by the expressive characteristics of Seneca’s philosophy and are interpreted as reflecting a truly tragic aesthetic; on the other, the nature of gesture contributes to reflection on the way in which dramatic texts are experienced, which engages both the emotions and the spectator’s attention and critical judgment.
Il lavoro si pone l’obiettivo di comprendere la natura e l’uso del gesto all’interno delle finalità sceniche della tragedia di Seneca. L’indagine viene articolata su due livelli: da un lato, i gesti trovano una motivazione nelle caratteristiche espressive della filosofia senecana e vengono interpretati come rispondenti a un’estetica propriamente tragica; la natura del gesto, dall’altro, concorre alla riflessione sulla modalità di fruizione del testo drammatico, che coinvolge sia le emozioni, sia l’attenzione e il giudizio critico dello spettatore.
