Brekekekex koax koax: sull’esegesi di Ar. Ran. 209-68

Abstract

The struggle between Dionysus and the frogs has been subject to multiple interpretations: how does the god manage to defeat the frogs and to reduce them to silence? Willy’s explanation (already anticipated by B. Thiersch in 1830), although mostly neglected, is the only one able to provide an adequate answer to this question: Dionysus’ repeated brekekekex koax koax are ‘verbal’ pordai that mimic and ridicule the unbearable croaking of the frogs and their singing ambitions. Other examples of the proktos laletikostopos in the artistic-musical field support this interpretation.
