Il servo senza nome del Truculentus: storia d’un aggettivo che divenne titolo

Abstract

This contribution questions the real name of the character of the seruus rusticus, investigating his existence in the manuscripts relevant to the constitutio textus. Since the servant is never called by name in the verses of the comedy – if anything, truculentus is an adjective used to describe his temper and Stratilax actually derives from a corruption of the name Strabax – conclusion is that seruus rusticus did not need a proper name, as he was an already stereotypical comic mask. Maybe the pièce could even have had a different title at the beginning and only later, as the comedy became associated with the hilarious figure of the seruus truculentus, the name Truculentus was chosen for it, as testified by the stage titles, the current titles and the indirect tradition.

Il contributo si interroga sul vero nome del personaggio del seruus rusticus, indagandone l’esistenza nei manoscritti rilevanti per la constitutio textus. Poiché all’interno dei versi della commedia il servo non viene mai appellato con un nome – truculentus è infatti nient’altro che un aggettivo utilizzato per descriverne il carattere e Stratilax deriva in realtà da una corruttela del nome Strabax – si arriva alla conclusione che il seruus rusticus, in quanto maschera comica già sufficientemente stereotipata, non avesse bisogno di un nome proprio. Forse allora anche la pièce aveva originariamente un titolo diverso e solo in un secondo momento, associando la commedia all’esilarante figura del seruus truculentus, si scelse di assegnarle il nome di Truculentus, come testimoniatoci dai titoli di scena, dai titoli correnti e dalla tradizione indiretta.
