Abstract
L’articolo prende in esame sei trasposizioni audiovisive del mito degli Argonauti prodotte in Europa e negli Stati Uniti fra il 1958 e il 2000: Le fatiche di Ercole (1958) di Pietro Francisci, I giganti della Tessaglia (1960) di Riccardo Freda, Jason and the Argonauts (1962) di Don Chaffey, Medea (1970) di Pier Paolo Paolini, Das goldene Ding (1974) di Edgar Reitz e Jason and the Argonauts (2000) di Nick Willing. Di ciascun film viene offerta una lettura critica finalizzata a contestualizzarlo storicamente e a ricostruirne la vicenda produttiva, mettendone in luce al contempo le caratteristiche intrinseche. Pur senza ignorare le qualità formali delle pellicole esaminate, l’analisi si sofferma soprattutto sulle soluzioni adottate in sede di sceneggiatura, allo scopo di evidenziare le trasformazioni inedite e talora bizzarre che il materiale narrativo desunto dalle fonti antiche subisce all’interno di ogni singolo adattamento, ma anche le scelte competenti e rispettose della tradizione mitologica operate non di rado dagli autori del copione. Ciascuna scheda è preceduta dai credits del cast tecnico e artistico e da un’accurata sinossi del film.
This article analyses six audiovisual adaptations of the Argonauts’ myth produced in Europe and in the United States between 1958 and 2000: Le Fatiche di Ercole (1958) by Pietro Francisci, I Giganti della Tessaglia (1960) by Riccardo Freda, Jason and the Argonauts (1962) by Don Chaffey, Medea (1970) by Pier Paolo Pasolini, Das Goldene Ding (1974) by Edgar Reitz, and Jason and the Argonauts (2000) by Nick Willing. Each film is viewed through a critical interpretation aiming to provide it with a historical background, with wide information about production and style, and detailed comments on its more relevant features. While not neglecting the formal characteristics of the films here selected, this article focuses on their scripts, in order to highlight the new and sometimes peculiar transformations that the literary matter derived from the ancient sources meets in each adaptation, but also to emphasize the accuracy and correctness towards myths and traditions often shown by screenwriters. Before each critical comment, a full cast and crew list and a detailed plot are provided.
