Abstract
La fortuna della vicenda di Edipo Re nel teatro italiano del Cinquecento fu piuttosto limitata. Se da un lato il dramma di Sofocle godeva di grande considerazione fra i teorici della tragedia, soprattutto in conseguenza del giudizio espresso su di esso da Aristotele nella Poetica, dall’altro il suo intreccio non possedeva i requisiti tipici del genere tragico che veniva praticato all’epoca sulle scene italiane. In un simile contesto, la scelta dell’Edipo re per la celebre rappresentazione vicentina al Teatro Olimpico del 3 marzo 1585 costituisce una vistosa eccezione.
During the Sixteenth century Oedipus Rex had apparently limited theatrical success in Italy. While the text of the Sophoclean play was highly valued by theorists of tragedy, particularly in the light of the verdict expressed on it by Aristotle in his Poetics, its plot did not meet the typical requirements of the tragic genre practiced at the time on the Italian stage. Within such context, the choice of Oedipus the Kingfor the famous staging in Vicenza at the Teatro Olimpico (March 3, 1585) represents a remarkable exception.
