Abstract

The present essay focuses on the story about the origin of Greek satyr-play which arises from ancient Greek sources: the paroemiographer Zenobius and the Suda. It is said that satyr-play was introduced in Athens by a foreigner, a Dorian poet from Phleius called Pratinas. Nevertheless this new genre is supposed to restore to the Athenian scene the original and ancient dionysian features which tragedy had lost through out its evolution. This account displays pairs of opposites : new/old, foreign/Athenian, dionysiac/non dionysiac. This account can be read as would be a myth revealing the conception of satyr-play held by Aristotelian and Alexandrian litterary criticism. I suggest that the dramaturgical patterns typical of satyr-play, which can be identified in the extant texts, have contributed to the shaping of the whole story.
