Abstract
Aeschylus probably left Athens after the success of Oresteia for fear of revenge from the conservative party. The story of the eagle and the tortoise is manifestly absurd, it only says that the poet’s corpse was found with its cranium smashed. The assassination may have been perpetrated by political opponents who could not prosecute him, as they did with other members of the popular party.
Il testo recentemente scoperto e attribuito a Posidippo ha riaperto il dibattito sull’opposizione delle arti del poeta e Eschilo probabilmente lasciò Atene dopo il successo dell’Orestea per timore di ritorsioni da parte dei conservatori. La storia dell’aquila e della tartaruga è chiaramente assurda. Racconta semplicemente che il cadavere del poeta fu trovato col cranio fracassato. L’assassinio può essere stato eseguito dagli oppositori politici che non potevano perseguirlo, come invece fecero con altri membri del partito popolare.
