Abstract

“Fare teatro” in ambito universitario implica finalità, metodi e mezzi specifici.

In this paper, the author describes the activities of the Classical Dramaturgy Workshop organized by Università Cattolica di Milano since 2002-2003. Every year, this workshop has led to the organization of one or more theatrical events at various levels, depending on the available resources, but always with a focus on an in-depth study of the classical text and of its dramaturgy. Every performance corresponds to an interpretation, experimented and verified in front of the audience. “Doing theatre” at academic level implies specific aims, methods and tools. In the first part of the paper, the author explains the circumstances that allowed the organization of the workshop and the reasons behind it (intellectual reflections and ideal motivations). In the second part, the author describes the specific aims of the Classical Dramaturgy Workshop (B) and of the workshop system (C), whose “systemic” complexity is explained. In fact, the workshop system is constituted by a series of interdependent elements, all of which are necessary for its functioning: didactic organization (C 1a), didactic methods (C 1b), organization and performance of the play (here described in a summary table: C 2a-b), economic resources (C 3), spaces for teaching, performing and storing set design objects (C 4ab), events advertising (C 5), scientific publications of the workshop participants (C 6). The author describes not only the successes, but also the problematic aspects of this workshop, which aims at organizing theatrical performances of classical plays able to reach the contemporary audience. In the Conclusions (D), the author summarizes the eight years of experience, highlighting the positive aspects thanks to which it will hopefully be possible to keep on organizing the workshop also in the future, despite all the difficulties, in the hope that these experiences will be useful for others who might want to undertake similar efforts.
